PLEASE READ THIS - This clip is from the 1954 film, "The Egyptian", which was directed by the famous Michael Curtiz, who was also responsible for such gems as "The Charge of the Light Brigade" (1936) with Errol Flynn; "Casablanca" (1942) with Bogart and Bergman; and "Mildred Pierce" (1945) with Joan Crawford. While the dancing in this clip is very brief the steamy presence of Bella Darvi more than compensates. The film starred Edmund Purdom as Sinuhe, the brilliant physician who is drawn into the intrigues of the Pharoah's court; Victor Mature plays his friend, Horemheb, who rises to power and influence; Jean Simmons appears as Merit, the shy tavern girl who is secretly in love with Sinuhe; and Bella Darvi played Nefer, the Babylonian courtesan that Sinuhe becomes increasingly infatuated with. The veil dancer is Carmen De Lavallade, a gifted American dancer who appeared in numerous films including "Demetrius and the Gladiators" (1954), also with Victor Mature, and "Carmen Jones" (1954), with Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge. Omaggio ad un Compositore del '900 che andrebbe riscoperto. Troppo frettolosamente etichettato come epigono di Gustav Mahler, Wellesz in realtà dimostrò lungo la sua carriera di possedere idee e personalità in grado di garantirgli un posto tra i Compositori importanti del suo secolo, attraverso un linguaggio che dall'ipercromatismo tipico del periodo pre-espressionista lo condusse fino ai confini della musica seriale. Il debito con l'estetica mahleriana nella sua prima Sinfonia (1945)è evidente, quasi al limite del citazionismo letterale (il finale riprende in modo palese le suggestioni della Sinfonia N.9 di Mahler, quasi a volerne sancire una sorta di continuità storica) ma allo stesso tempo sembra volersene affrancare privilegiando al sontuoso sinfonismo del '900 storico, un linguaggio più scarno ed essenziale, memore della lezione espressionista prima e dodecafonica poi. Il secco e glaciale incedere di questo splendido adagio preannuncia quello che sarà il successivo percorso musicale di Wellesz, votato non ad una ricerca musicale di stampo avanguardistico bensì ad una personalissima rilettura del sinfonismo di stampo tedesco, gelida e spigolosa, ma di impareggiabile bellezza.
