PART ONE OF TWENTY-FOUR: This is a full live performance by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies in Sandpoint, Idaho on 8/2/2002, filmed by someone other than myself. This footage is special in a way, because this show was the Daddies' first concert after their two-year hiatus in 2000, after the commercial failure of their astoundingly brilliant fourth album, 'Soul Caddy'. This song you hear here is 'Dr. Bones', a punky swing number originally off the band's 1989 demo tape, which then appeared on the 1994 rerelease of their album 'Ferociously Stoned' and the 1997 compilation 'Zoot Suit Riot' Setlist: 1. Rafael Brom - BIOGRAPHY Rafael Brom was born in Prague (formerly Czechoslovakia, but now called the Czech Republic) on August 13, 1952. He was born into a musical family. His mother was a popular professional singer, pianist, composer, and dancer. His father was an outstanding piano player and composer and grandfather was considered a musical virtuoso. In 1963, Rafael emigrated to Sarajevo. While in Sarajevo, Rafael studied several levels of Graphics Arts and Design, Communication Arts, and Fine Arts. To see Rafael's artwork visit: Rafael's Art Gallery. He was a student of several well-known Academy professors and international graphic artists. One such professor was Mersad Berber. After completing his education, Rafael worked full-time for an energy company as a graphics designer. He did this to support his mother and brother. With the help of his father, Libor, and Senator Armstrong, Rafael emigrated to the United States in 1979. Upon arriving in the United States, Rafael worked for several energy companies as a graphics illustrator. He dedicated his free time to music, painting, illustrations and helping his father publishing books. In 1983, Rafael released his first 12" vinyl record, 'Rafael Brom I'. This recording is now included on 'Dance for Padre Pio'. This album received significant airplay on public and college radio stations in the USA and Canada. After the release of this album, Rafael became a member of ASCAP. He received a special ASCAP award a few years later. Rafael moved to Los Angeles, California in 1984. While there, he established his own record label, Cosmotone Records. He also started Publishing Company Cosmotone Music (ASCAP) and a distribution company, Center for the Queen of Peace. He then released 3 more albums, 'Padre Pio' (Lord Hamilton) This recording is now included on 'Dance for Padre Pio', 'Peace of Heart', and 'The Sounds of Heaven'. Canada Offers Billions for Auto Bailout
Hold on baby, here I come. *A collapse of the Detroit Three automakers would put nearly 600,000 Canadians out of work within five years, most of them in Ontario, as the impact ripples through the entire economy. The study, commissioned by the Ontario Manufacturing Council, a government advisory panel of industry and labour representatives, warned that a collapse of General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler Corp would spread across the country, hitting creditors, suppliers, parts manufacturers and dealerships. Effects on employment would be felt right away, the report states, with Canada losing 323,000 jobs if production ceased immediately, and 281,800 in Ontario alone, the report forecasts. Those figures would climb in five years to 582,000 jobs nationally in 2014, 517,000 of those in Ontario. A U.S. diplomat said that Prime Minister Stephen Harper called President George W. Bush said that if the United States provided aid, Canada would provide its own aid of 20 percent, which could amount to several billion dollars from Ottawa. Canada's potential $2.8 billion rescue package for the U.S.-based automakers is just the first of what could be several payments, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says. McGuinty said that the C$3.4 billion promised jointly by Ottawa and Ontario to the Detroit Three is simply a lifeline to sustain the industry. General Motors (GM Quote - Cramer on GM - Stock Picks), Chrysler and Ford Motor (F Quote - Cramer on F - Stock Picks) all have large operations in Ontario. McGuinty warns it's too early to speculate on how high the aid could go because the province is still assessing documents and plans. Smart Friends for the New Economy
My coworkers and I made this video as a team building exercise prior to a company retreat in spring 2000. We were all brand new hires at the NYC office of an SF-based technology and computer magazine that had been PC Computing but, at the time of our hire, was transitioning to become Smart Business for the New Economy, which, uh, needless to say, was all drunk on new economy boomtown gin. Featured players are Don Steinberg, Kayte VanScoy, Desiree DeMyer, John Galvin, and Geoffrey Precourt, but the star of the show is the song we commissioned from Earthpig (aka, Adam Bork), an Austin-based artist who also, I think, edited it together for us and put in titles, etc. The bit where I text Don in the elevator is a goof on this popular commercial at the time where this gal texts her number to a dude in a passing subway train. It was all new at the time and seemed really exciting. Mea culpa. First class new economy propaganda!
