Benighted

A recording made in Ider, AL in 1980 of the Wootten family sitting on their front porch and singing #32t from the Sacred Harp shape-note tunebook. I believe this recording was made by Alan Lomax on behalf of the US Gov't, though I could be wrong.
To see Jim Carnes' *excellent* Sacred Harp documentary video from whence this audio came, called "Sweet Is the Day", refer to http://www.folkstreams.net/video/SweetIsTheDay//SweetDay.mov
The Woottens here do such a beautiful job of it, unlike the Western Massachusetts "convention" where it's butchered like the rest of the Sacred Harp. Guess it helps when it comes from the HEARTS of actual Christians from the Deep South, not the twisted minds of a group of Massachusetts atheists condescendingly viewing it as "folk" music.
This is one of my favorite songs from the Sacred Harp, because it's message is Biblical, correct, succinct, and very slightly humorous. The idea of being ashamed of Jesus, our Lord and Savior who laid down his life and blood for you and me at Calvary that we might have life should we choose to believe on Him, is as RIDICULOUS as the idea of midnight being ashamed of noon.
The lyrics:
VERSE 1:
Jesus, and shall it ever be,
A mortal man ashamed of thee?
Ashamed of thee whom angels praise,
Whose glories shine thru endless days.
VERSE 2 (my favorite):
Ashamed of Jesus! just as soon
Let midnight be ashamed of noon;
'Tis midnight with my soul till He,
Bright morning star, bids darkness flee.

This is just a small tribute to who I consider to be the greatest band...please ignore the singing if you have any sense of tone, I just can't help it because I love the song so damn much (I ALWAYS sing along, heheh). I think I ALMOST nailed the picking, the transition screwed me though. And before I get flooded with bitchy comments, I KNOW I didn't get the structure of the song perfect, I'm impatient, heheh. This video is just meant to represent how f*cking hard it is to learn Akerfeldt's brilliant writing. Please comment if you feel the need! Haters/lovers, all are welcome, BUT leave your Opeth bashing at the door, I cannot abide it.
