Concerned

Professor Stephen Marglin holds the Walter S Barker Chair in the Department of Economics at Harvard University. Over a career that now spans more than four decades, he has contributed to various aspects of economic theory, including benefit-cost analysis, economic development, the organization of work, and the relationship between growth and distribution. One theme running through this distinguished career has been a concern with development economics. Beginning with his work in the 60s as an advisor to the Indian Planning Commission, Marglin has questioned the assumption that development equates to nothing more than growth of GNP. More broadly, Marglin's professional life has been an attempt to change the way economists think about economics to get economists to see the whole enterprise of economics as one way of seeing the world rather than the way of seeing the world. His latest effort towards this goal is the recent publication 'The Dismal Science: How Thinking like an Economist Undermines Community'.

Theyre a nicely bundled package, and theyre free. How can you beat that?" 23 SELF-LEARNER If we hoard information, we cant have progress Robert Croghan, self-learner and educator in Saint Lucia On the island of Saint Lucia, dramatic coastal peaks shelter stunning interior expanses of rainforest, punctuated by lush valleys of fruit trees. The island paradise owes its idyllic climate in part to its tropical location, and in part to a dormant volcano several kilometers below the surface of the ocean that acts as a natural heat vent. In this day and age, when it seems like universities are more concerned with making money than advancing and transferring knowledge, this sort of initiative is refreshing." — MIT Alumna, Class of 1985 "Having attended the Beaver Factory from 1955 to 1960 with an S.B. in Course 18, I am overjoyed to see the leap that Tech has made in its innovative information sharing. As I peruse the courses (fun to see I have forgotten little) I shall send impressions... MITs president deserves the highest kudos. Many thanks."

(Song: Taylor Swift - Tell Me Why)
*****Recap: Joe and Kevin had a talk about why Kevin broke it off with Ashley. When Kevin told Joe that Ashley isn't bad at all, Joe began to feel bad, because he's the reason for their split. Meanwhile, Selena and Miley were at the park, and when Cody showed up, Selena ditched to let them have their private time. Cody offered to walk Miley home, and she gladly accepted. Later on, Joe called Ashley to work things out.*****
(Ashley felt her jaw drop. Why on Earth was Joe calling her?)
Joe: Look, I know Im the last person you expected to hear from.
Ashley: (annoyed) Thats the truth.
Joe: But my brother told me that the reason he dumped you was because of me.
Ashley: (sarcastic) No, really?
(Ashley rolled her eyes, and Joe sighed loudly.)
Joe: (kindly) Anyways, I just wanted to apologize to you.
Ashley: (shocked) WHAT?
((MEANWHILE))
(Cody and Miley finally reached Mileys house. Neither of them wanted the walk to end, though. The two walked up the front stairs and were on the porch.)
Miley: Thanks for walking me home, Cody.
(Cody smiled, and figured now would be the perfect time to ask her out on a real date.)
Cody: (casual) Hey, did you hear about the carnival this weekend?
Miley: Yeah, I did.
Cody: (calmly) We should go together.
(Miley felt her heart literally stop. She tried her hardest not to pass out. But she was so ecstatic! Cody was finally asking her out!)
Miley: (happy) Yeah! That...

Obviously my answering machine is only audio but here's another video. I just played this recording into my phone from my speakers.. except the phone didn't exactly have the best mic ever.. so I ended up changing my message because a lot of people said they couldn't understand it.
I recorded all four parts in about 20 minutes. I wasn't really too concerned about the quality because I figured it would only be on my phone anyway. So unfortunately the cutoffs aren't together.. and my pitch on the post was kind of wavery too, but here it is anyway.
The music is from the barbershop arrangement of the song Cruella de Vil (there is a video of our quartet singing it), but I felt this one was a little more personal.
Thanks again to Andrew. (Andrewkesler)
"You've reached Danny Fong but I'm not here..

RIGHT RELATIONSHIP: Building a Whole Earth Economy
Buy book from Berrett-Koehler Publishers: http://tinyurl.com/634ha3
Our current economic system—which assumes endless growth and limitless potential wealth—flies in the face of the fact that the earths resources are finite. The result is increasing destruction of the natural world and growing, sometimes lethal, tension between rich and poor, global north and south. Trying to fix problems piecemeal is not the solution. We need a comprehensive new vision of an economy that can serve people and all of lifes commonwealth.
Peter G. Brown and Geoffrey Garver use the core Quaker principle of right relationship—interacting in a way that is respectful to all and that aids the common good—as the foundation for a new economic model. Right Relationship poses five basic questions: What is an economy for? How does it work? How big is too big? Whats fair? And how can it best be governed? Brown and Garver expose the antiquated, shortsighted, and downright dangerous assumptions that underlie our current answers to these questions, as well as the shortcomings of many current reform efforts. They propose new answers that combine an acute awareness of ecological limits with a fundamental focus on fairness and a concern with the spiritual, as well as material, well-being of the human race.
