GTW 4622 Screams All the Way to Luxemburg 5/14/2008
It was almost midnight on a Tuesday evening when I heard it. An unmistakeable train horn, as I was walking back to my apartment on the UWGB campus. I had heard these late night trains before from campus, but had never seen one. I had learned from other Green Bay area railfans that such trains are rare-usually once a week or less. Daylight trains are even rarer. Only two have ever been documented by railfans in recent history-by Jesse Fameree in February 2007, and myself that November, so this video represents a more typical time for this operation. The line that goes by the campus is the remnants of the former Green Bay & Western Kewaunee Subdivision, which now terminates on the west side of Luxemburg. The engineer of Grand Trunk Western EMD GP9R #4622 lays on the horn for the rural crossings, the sound echoing off the rolling hills and fields of northeast Wisconsin. A light spring rain begins to fall as his train slices through the darkness to Luxemburg. There's only one regular customer in town, and they get a handful of hoppers per trip. The boxcars and reefers are from customers on the east side of Green Bay. They take the cars with them to Luxemburg to save time on the return trip. Otherwise they would have to leave them in the sidings at Eastman Avenue and stop to add them back onto the train for the short distance back to the yard. This also has the side effect of making the line appear busier than it really is. This may be my last video of Canadian National operations for quite some time, as I have graduated from UWGB and will not be returning unless I can get a job in the area.

GTW 4622 Working Hilbert 11/21/2007
On a rainy Wednesday in November, I was headed home for Thanksgiving and decided to take a little different route than usual. I took State Highway 57 parallel to the former Milwaukee Road line between Green Bay and Milwaukee, which is recreational trail from Green Bay to just north of Hilbert. I had just passed through that town when there alongside the road was the train that works this section of the line, the CN local based out of Neenah, ambling along on its way back from working in Kiel, New Holstein and Chilton. I turned around and headed to the Main Street crossing. The engine, Grand Trunk Western EMD GP9R 4622, came through light to make a pickup of some gondolas loaded with what looked like chunks of stone or concrete. It shoved these across the road and back into the train, then continued north, soon to take the connector to the east-west ex-MILW Manitowoc line for the rest of the journey back to Neenah. The diamond crossing of these two former CMStP&P lines is still in place on the north side of Hilbert, with about a mile of track continuing north, used only for car storage. CN intended to abandon a portion of this line south of Kiel in 2004, but ended up selling it to the state of Wisconsin. That part of the line is now operated by WSOR out of Milwaukee.

WVOL Rail Camp 2008: Part 2
[Watch in High Quality for best results] In Part 2, you'll come along for the ride on a dinner train, exclusively run for the WVOL campers and staff, between Moorefield and Romney. Our locomotive is none other than GP9R #92, which campers ran earlier in the day. You'll also catch the return trip, when you compare to the northbound ride, is much quieter. By far one of the best train rides I've been on, bar none. Be sure to watch Part 3, featuring a speeder trip from Moorefield to Sector and return, with a surprise in between!
