Holst: The Planets – II: Venus, the Bringer of Peace

Holst: The Planets – II: Venus, the Bringer of Peace

Gustav Holst’s ‘The Planets’ by the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis with video from the History Channel’s series ‘The Universe’ The music: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=56556187&s=143441 “The Planets” Op. 32 is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the British composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1916. The Planets is the most-performed composition by an English composer. Its first complete public performance occurred during World War I on 10 October 1918 in Birmingham, with Appleby Matthews conducting. The elaborate score of The Planets produces unusual, complex sounds by using some out-of-the-ordinary instruments in the large orchestra, such as a bass oboe, two timpani players, celesta, xylophone, tubular bells, and organ. Holst had been influenced by Igor Stravinsky, who used four oboes and four bassoons in his “The Rite of Spring” (which Carl Sagan used in the soundtrack to Cosmos), and by Schoenberg's 1909 composition Five Pieces for Orchestra. The video: Fragments from Season 1 Episode 7 of the History Channel’s series, “The Universe,” called “The Inner Planets.” Currently in its third season, “The Universe” is an excellent series and can be seen Tuesdays at 9pm. Islam - Empire of Faith :: [Part 6 of 18]

Islam - Empire of Faith :: [Part 6 of 18]

Islam - Empire of Faith (PBS) Islam - Empire of Faith is a documentary series, made in 2000, that details the history of Islam, from the birth of the Islamic Prophet, Muhammad to the Ottoman Empire. This three episodes series covers more than a thousand years of Islamic history and culture, with emphasis on the contributions that Muslims have made in science, medicine, art, philosophy, learning, and trade. The first episode ("The Messenger") introduces the story of the rise of Islam, and the extraordinary life of the Prophet Muhammad. It covers the revelation of the Qur'an, the persecution suffered by the early Muslims, the first mosques, and then the rapid expansion of Islam. The second episode ("The Awakening") examines the growth of Islam into a world civilization. Through trade and learning, the Islamic influence extended further. Muslims made great achievements in architecture, medicine, and science, influencing the intellectual development of the West. This episode also explores the story of the Crusades (including stunning reenactments filmed in Iran), and ends with the invasion of Islamic lands by the Mongols. The third episode ("The Ottomans") looks at the dramatic rise and fall of the Ottoman Empire. Islamic leaders who viewed the documentary expressed appreciation for "the network's efforts to offer a balanced and accurate portrayal of Islamic history" (CAIR Board Chairman Omar Ahmad). Series producer Robert Gardner was responsive to Muslim concerns about specific aspects of the film, particularly an artistic image of the Prophet Muhammad which was later removed.
