Gaza: What Arabs are watching
CNN's Octavia Nasr reports on how Arab media is covering the conflict in Gaza. Graphic images, viewer discretion advised. The Arab world watches the bombardment of Gaza - and Hamas rocket attacks on Israel - through the lenses of networks like Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya. With a special focus on Palestinian casualties that is often emotional - sometimes angry. An Al-Arabiya report shows a young body being resuscitated in an emergency room as the reporter says, The wholesale baby killing continues in Gaza.. This baby was sleeping with his siblings when the Israeli strikes hit.. He died along with his brothers.. and his mother.. and his grandfather.. and his uncles.. Only his father is left surrounded by piles of sorrow. At this point the weeping father says, Theyre all gone.. I have no one left The Arab networks are pumping out round-the-clock coverage of the situation in Gaza - many of them have reporters and cameramen there. So they are witnesses to the effects of Israeli air strikes and shelling On Al-Jazeera, a Palestinian father carries a dead child and moans in a mixture of Hebrew and Arabic. Weve no way of knowing how or where the toddler was killed. Al-Jazeera then shows an even more distressing scene as the man picks up the lifeless bodies of two more children with what looks like bullet or shrapnel wounds in their chests. During one newscast, following another of the many airings of this scene, the presenters pause in shock before one of them hits his pen against the desk and moves on with the news. The Arab TV networks are inviting Israeli officials to appear - and the Israelis are accepting — even though they often find themselves subject to some hostile questioning by anchors who dont shy away from taking things personally.. In an interview with the Israeli military spokesperson, one Al-Jazeera anchor complains about what he calls a lack of transparency in Israels reporting of military casualties.
