However, most people in the industrial nations of Western Europe are not aware of that fact. The sea has a mythic rather than an existential dimension for the people living in densely populated areas and metropolises. As a place to rest and a symbol for freedom we seek it once a year during our vacation and idealize it quite often as a projection screen for our personal feelings and desires. How would we feel though, if it suddenly appeared right in front of our doorstep, if we could hear it, see the rhythm of tides and if we had an unblocked view on the Mediterraneani[i] on a daily basis? The utopian design Wehen (2007) by artist Johann Schrallhammer turns this bold idea into reality. Inspired by the stories of people, who used to live at the sea the artist from Garmisch-Partenkirchen developed an installation for the public space, which simulates the sea and the tides. The sculptural intervention for an urban open space consists of a triangular, acute-angled indentation including an underground well. A pumping system delivers saline water (brine) to the surface in the rhythm of tides so that the coastal sand beach is completely flooded with water from time to time. Via GPS (global positioning system) it would be possible to specifically simulate tides according to the respective installation location down to the minute. Also in „Wehen Johann Schrallhammer inventively combines state of the art High Tech with elementary forces as already demonstrated in his earlier works.
