An Architectural Walking Tour of Detroit
October 18, 2008 started with a delicious breakfast at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel following which I met Bob Goldsmith from Detroit Tour Connections for an architectural walking tour of downtown Detroit. Detroit has a large collection of early 20th century architecture, and the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel itself is one of the most stunning examples of architectural restoration. After many years of abandonment and decay, this 1924 Art Deco stunner was recently renovated at a cost of over $200 million. Bob and I walked south on Washington Avenue and admired the 1923 Lafayette Building, the 1928 Penobscot Building, the Federal Court Building and the Detroit Free Press Building. A short walk away is the stunning Guardian Building, a 1925 Art Deco jewel with extensive Aztec-style decorations that used to be called the Cathedral of Finance. This building quickly became my Detroit favourite. Further south we explored Hart Plaza, Detroits Civic Centre which features several interesting sculptures. The waterfront right next to it is highlighted by the Gateway to Freedom, an impressive sculpture commemorating the Underground Railroad that was dedicated in 2001. Back up in the city we admired Campus Martius Park, a recently redesigned outdoor gathering place for many Detroiters. After a brief peek into the Art Deco-era David Stott Building we headed back to Washington Boulevard and took in the Kales Building, the David Broderick Tower and the David Whitney Building. This area, also referred to as skyscraper graveyard, was also home to the renowned Statler Hotel and the Hotel Tuller, both now demolished. Our architectural walking tour concluded with a visit to Detroits Eastern Market which was hustling and bustling on this Saturday morning.

Atheist bus ad campaign in UK 2-3
Atheists launch an ad campaign on buses across the U.K. Lonzo Cook reports. Atheist adverts declaring that "there's probably no God" have been placed on 800 buses around Britain after an unprecedented fundraising campaign. Organisers originally hoped to put the message on just a handful of London buses, as an antidote to posters put up by religious groups which they claimed were "threatening eternal damnation" to non-believers. But after the campaign received high-profile support from the prominent atheist Prof Richard Dawkins and the British Humanist Association, the modest £5,500 target was met within minutes and more than £140,000 has now been donated since the launch in October. Enough money has now been raised to place the message "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life" on 200 bendy buses in the capital for a month, with the first ones taking to the streets. A further 600 buses carrying the adverts will be seen by passengers and passers-by in cities across England, Wales and Scotland, from Aberdeen and Dundee to York, Coventry, Swansea and Bristol. In addition, two large LCD screens bearing the atheist message have been placed in Oxford Street, central London, while 1,000 posters containing quotes from well-known non-believers will be placed on Underground trains for two weeks starting on Monday. They feature lines doubting the existence of God, and celebrating the natural world, written by Albert Einstein, Katharine Hepburn, Douglas Adams and Emily Dickinson. It is the first ever atheist advertising campaign to take place in Britain, and similar adverts are now also running on public transport in America and Spain. Ariane Sherine, a writer who first thought of the atheist bus adverts, said: "You wait ages for an atheist bus, then 800 come along at once. Did UFO Damage Great Britain Wind Farm?
Published Date: 05 January 2009 COULD the damage to a turbine at Conisholme wind farm be the work of UFO's? Reports of a large bang and flashing lights skimming across the sky on the night a turbine on Conisholme wind farm was damaged have been told. Mr Stephen Willows and his wife, Dorothy who live in Fen Lane close to the Conisholme wind farm have told the Leader how Stephen was startled in his sleep by a loud bang at 4am Sunday morning. It is believed the damage which has left one of the massive blades missing and another bent out of shape happened at some point on Sunday night. They also reported how on Saturday night, Dorothy and two friends were travelling to Louth by car, when Dorothy looked up at the sky to see lights travelling in a strange fashion across the sky towards the wind farm. Dorothy said: "I don't believe in UFO's but it was a low flying object. This light seemed to be in the distance, and then it seemed to skim across the sky towards the turbines. "It might not be connected, but it is just how your mind works when something like this happens you think, could that have been the noise Stephen heard, or was that to do the light I saw? But until we know what has happened for definite it is very hard to say". The couple went to the scene to have a closer look, and like many residents, take photographs of the damage. But, when they arrived at the scene, they were shocked to find they had little evidence to go on. "When we got there, there was nothing to be seen - not even the propeller on the ground" added Dorothy. "Those blades are pretty sturdy we saw them when they were being constructed whatever has hit them has made quite an impact. I was shocked to see that there was no debris left". The company, Ecotricity have since sent engineers down to establish the cause of the damage to the turbine.
