Israel resumes deadly Gaza attacks

Israel resumes deadly Gaza attacks

Violence has resumed in the Gaza Strip after a three-hour halt to attacks Israel termed a "humanitarian respite". The brief lull allowing Gaza's beleaguered residents to look for food and fuel was also followed by news that Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, had been given the green light by the security cabinet to order a deeper offensive into Gaza towns as part of its stated aim to halt Hamas cross-border rocket attacks. Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, chaired the security cabinet meeting in Jerusalem which "approved continuing the ground offensive, including a third stage that would broaden it by pushing deeper into populated areas," a senior defence official said. The final decision will be left with Barak, the official added. Israel has warned thousands of people in the Rafah zone on the Egyptian border to leave their houses ahead of planned air strikes. "You have until 8am [06:00 GMT]," on Thursday, said leaflets which were dropped by the Israeli military. At least 700 Palestinians, including 219 children, have died in Gaza since Israel began its assault on December 27, and that number continues to climb. More than 3,080 people have also been wounded. Seven Israeli soldiers and three civilians have died in the same period. Soon after the three-hour lull on Wednesday, an Israeli air raid on a car in Beit Lahia, near Gaza's northern border with Israel, killed three children and their father, who was described as a civilian by medical workers in the besieged strip. Temporary lull Palestinians and aid workers in and around Gaza City had used Wednesday's brief respite to recover dead bodies, treat the wounded, and gather much-needed supplies in and around Gaza City. Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman, announced "offensive" military action across the strip would be suspended for three hours every alternating day, although the timings may vary. Despite this, Israeli air raids were reported on other parts of the Palestinian...

GAZA (Israel condemned for attacks on UN schools)

ABC News (Australia) 7 January 2009 Israel condemned for attacks on UN schools --- ABC News (Australia) 7 January 2009 Fighting in Gaza resumes after 3hr ceasefire ends Clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian gunmen have resumed in the city of Gaza after the expiration of a three-hour truce to allow in humanitarian aid, residents said. The Israeli army had earlier announced it would suspend its bombing of the Palestinian territory between 1:00pm and 4:00pm local time (11:00am GMT and 2:00pm GMT) daily to allow the passage of humanitarian aid but would respond to rocket fire. "I can confirm that there is a cessation of offensive activities at this time in order to facilitate humanitarian transfers and we will enable the population to resupply themselves and facilitate the work of the NGOs," Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner said. A member of Hamas's politburo said the Palestinian movement would not fire any rockets towards Israel while the Jewish state suspends its bombing of Gaza. "I do not expect that any rockets will be launched during the three-hour period," the Damascus-based Mussa Abu Marzuk, one of Hamas's most senior leaders, was quoted as saying by his spokesman. However, there were at least two air strikes on Gaza in the first few minutes of the ceasefire, and observers say it is unclear if it covers all of Gaza. A spokesman for the UN relief agency UNWRA, John Ging, welcomed the lull. "Well it'll be 3 hours out of 24 hours of safety first and secondly we will be able to do what we can do in 3 hours in terms of distributing aid to a population here that are in a dreadful state" he said. In the city of Gaza, hundreds took to the streets during the hiatus, shopping and visiting relatives. - AFP/Reuters http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/01/08/2461245.htm
