In Memory Of Dusttin C. Duncan

In Memory Of Dusttin C. Duncan

A Story Of Dusttin C. Duncan! Dusttin was diagnosed with Leukemia on March 16/17, 2005 and caught it early and in remission as early as April, 2005. Dusttin passed suddenly and unexpectedly on July 21, 2005, Just 4 days after his 6th Birthday.. Very painful and devastating! He was misdiagnosed when he was admitted with a fever and this turned our lives upside down, a nightmare that will forever be with us..... One night after a great day with Dusttin i was preparing Dusttin to bed, getting his pajamas on him and I noticed Dusttin had some bruises on him, he had about 10 little bruises on him the size of my pinky finger nail. I was curious, so i called the health clinic and asked if i should bring him him. They called the doctors and then called me back telling me to bring him into the clinic in the morning. Dusttin and I walked to the clinic the following morning, and we saw a different doctor as my family doctor was not in that day. This doc said to me, in a rude way, all kids bruise.. HE acted like i was bringing in my son for some little normal bruises. Sure all kids bruise, but these bruises did not look like normal ones. They happened to all look the same and had them spread out on him. Doc sent Dusttin for blood work. ' WE did that. The next morning on March 16th i got a call from my family doctor telling me to bring Dusttin to the pediatricians, that his platelets were really really low. And that it could be a possible sign of leukemia. Then and there i freaked out and called Kirk at work, crying and called my sister crying... Told Jonathon we were taking Dusttin to the pediatricians.... I jumped in the shower crying histerically.... Kirk made it home, we took Dusttin up to the pediatricians. She said Dusttin had to be admitted so we could do further testing. Dusttin was happy, he didn't look or act sick. He only had some bruises on him. I did not understand.. I just new it was a nightmare starting of some sort..... I never experienced...

Swim, Bike, Run, & Make a Difference!

I was recently asked to name my greatest accomplishment. I didnt have an immediate answer but thought about what could be one of my greatest accomplishments and that would be crossing the finish line of a triathlon with Team in Training. So what is Team in Training? Team in Training (TNT) is one of the most innovative fundraising programs, raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the worlds largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Their mission is to cure leukemia, Hodgkins Disease, and myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Each season, Team in Training forms teams for specific endurance events, including triathlons and marathons. By enrolling, you receive a 4-5 month training program to help you successfully complete the event, while you raise funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. TNT is a celebration of life, the human spirit, physical ability, and mental endurance. This is one of the biggest challenges that many of you will ever undertake. And because of this, TNT provides dedicated, passionate and very experienced coaches that help you reach your training goals. TNT Mentors, alumni who have successfully completed the program and exceeded their fundraising goals, are also there to support and continuously encourage you. And if youre worried about the fundraising goal, dont! You also have the support of The Society to guide you towards exceeding that goal. So if you want to reach your personal fitness goals, but would also love to give back at the same time, check out Team in Training (www.lls.org). Your personal fitness accomplishments can make an even bigger difference!

From Boston - According to research in the journal Cell Metabolism, the failed anti-obesity drug leptin may be useful after all. In a previous study, leptin did not produce the desired outcome in obese patients, who developed a resistance to its effects. However, in a new study of mice, researchers have found that using drugs that re-sensitize the brain to leptin allows for significant weight loss, and has renewed hopes of using leptin as a natural treatment for obesity. From Kentucky - According to a study in Clinical Cancer Research, grape seed extract may have benefits for the treatment of leukemia. Researchers have found that grape seed extract can cause leukemia cell death by activating certain proteins involved in apoptosis. In the study, the researchers discovered that a 10 mcg/mL dose of extract moderately increased leukemia cell death, while a 25 mcg/mL dose increased cell death extensively. The extract had no effect on healthy cells. And finally, from Montréal - According to research in the journal Development and Psychopathology, children of pregnant smokers are more likely to be aggressive. In a study of over 1,700 children, researchers found that the children of mothers who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day had a 30% increased risk of high physical aggression than the children of women who did not smoke during pregnancy. It is estimated that about 25% of women in Québec still smoke during pregnancy. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
