Gaza under fire despite truce call

Israel is pushing ahead with its offensive in the Gaza Strip, ignoring a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire. A series of Israeli air raids and ground attacks on Friday killed at least 12 Palestinians in and around Gaza City, medical sources said. Palestinian doctors said tanks shelled a house in Beit Lahiya in the north of the Strip, killing six Gazans from the same family. The Israeli air force launched attacks overnight against what an army spokesman described as 50 targets, including launching pads for rockets fired from Gaza into Israel. The Israeli army said six rockets were also fired into southern Israel on Friday morning, injuring one person. The Israeli army said four rockets hit Beersheba, a town that lies about 40km from the Israeli-Gaza border, and the port of Ashdod. At least 778 Palestinians have been killed and 3,250 injured since the Israeli offensive began on December 27. More than 200 Palestinian children are among the dead. Thirteen Israelis, including three civilians, have been killed during the same period. The continuing hostilities come as a disappointment for those within the international community who have been pushing for a ceasefire since the conflict began. Sherine Tadros, Al Jazeeras correspondent in Gaza, said despite all the talk of peace at the United Nations in New York, there was "certainly no peace here in the Gaza Strip". She said explosions and heavy artillery fire could be continuously heard overnight and into Friday. The UN resolution, which was backed by 14 of the 15-member body with only the US abstaining, calls for an "immediate, durable and fully respected" ceasefire. It also said border crossings into Gaza should be re-opened and measures put in place to prevent the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza Strip Strip. The resolution underlined there should be "unimpeded provision" and distribution of aid into the territory, where Gazans have been starved of fuel, food and medical...

Anti-Israel protests mount across Asia and the Pacific

Manila/ Dhaka/ Auckland/ Kabul,January 8 (ANI):Protesters in Manila, Dhaka, Auckland and Kabul took to the streets on Thursday, demanding a halt to Israeli bombing in the Gaza Strip. Rain did not stop Filipino Muslims and human rights activists from marching to the Israeli Embassy in Manila carrying banners,a mock corpse and a giant shoe, to protest against the continued strikes in Gaza.Muslims from the People's Solidarity Action for Peace or PSAP called Israel's actions genocide, citing 680 Palestinians killed and at least 2,000 wounded within 12 days of fighting.

This is the second and final part of 'Yoga: Behind the Fatwa'. We continue the discussion on the Yoga Fatwa and ask trainers and practitioners what they are going to do when the Fatwa becomes law for Muslims. ---------------------- On November 22, 2008, the National Fatwa Council announced that Yoga is 'haram' in Islam and in one fell swoop, Muslims will no longer be allowed to practice it -- once it is gazetted as law. Yoga attracted what is arguably, unwarranted attention from no less than the NFC as a result of an opinion from an Islamic scholar that Yoga, could be 'haram' in Islam because it could cause Muslims to deviate from his or her faith. This decision drew criticisms from Muslim and non-Muslim practitioners who have felt real physical and mental benefits of Yoga through its physical exercise and meditative elements. The Fatwa or religious decree once gazetted, will become enforceable and challenges the rights of individuals of a particular faith from practising what is essentially an ancient form of exercise. The reason for the ban -- only that Yoga has Hindu roots. Malaysiakini talks to Yoga instructors and practitioners on their views towards the ban. We also talked to Norhayati Kaprawi of Sisters-In-Islam and Yusri Mohamad of Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) for their views on the Fatwa.
