The Huw Weldon Lecture: Look Back in Laughter by Bill Cotton OBE Pt5
On a late Saturday night in 1989, Channel 4 showed this lecture, given by BBC Executive Bill Cotton about TV comedy. The trailers made light of the fact that they were showing BBC clips on a commercial channel ("They wouldn't!";"Oh, yes, they would!"). The independant production company that made this programme, Noel Gay Television, had Bill Cotton on the board. More high quality US comedy came our way with Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, which co-starred the beautiful Goldie Hawn, who was destined for big screen stardom. Hawn also gave birth to the equally beautiful and talented Kate Hudson, also on the big screen. Following these transatlantic exchanges came the format deal, where UK sitcoms were edited and remade for the US market. Steptoe and Son was remade over in the US as Samford and Son, Till Death Us Do Part was exported as All in the Family, and Porridge was translated into On The Rocks whilst written by original authors Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.
