On the DNC Convention

On the DNC Convention
Episode XXIII of "Election '08," a series of spoken word works by Mike Varley covering the 2008 campaign. A new entry every Sunday with free mp3 downloads at mikevarley.com.On the DNC ConventionII.Hillary. Your Tuesday in the sun, though not the one you would have hoped. Later speeches would sap the ill I felt for you that night, but the burden of posterity brings it all back. Watching montages of praise for the biggest front-runner, train wreck of all time, appeasing the ego of the drama club captain, who couldn't quite grasp Shakespearean rhyme. And when the clapping stopped, her endorsement struck no deeper than a partisan "Rock the Vote" commercial. It spoke of party obligations, which sway no one but the tamest, and the die hards wept on camera. It would have taken true sincerity to convince these stalwarts, or perhaps just "Barack Obama is ready to be President." Conventional cynics see her eyes set on set on '12, but I'll take it one mile further. We've seen she has no qualms reshaping her words, why not rack up several more perjures? Is this really the model we want to fly higher? I warn you: those who say "At any cost" have nothing more to spend.III.I didn't think you had it in you, Willy. We've listened to you shred your legacy for weeks, it seemed you somewhat fancied the idea of being the last Democrat president on record. But out you went on foreign policy night, a mandate in hand to speak your peace. Looking ten years younger through some unknown...

There was nothing wrong with appeasement. All that World War Two achieved after six years was to leave Eastern Europe under a Communist dictatorship instead of a Fascist dictatorship. That's what comes of not listening to the Foreign Office

T.S.Eliot Burnt Norton I and II

T.S.Eliot Burnt Norton I and II
The Four Quartets are Eliot's masterpiece. The depth of his thought and the range of his intellect are everywhere obvious. These verses have been recited many times and can never be heard enough. Here is my rendition.ITime present and time pastAre both perhaps present in time future,And time future contained in time past.If all time is eternally presentAll time is unredeemable. What might have been is an abstractionRemaining a perpetual possibilityOnly in a world of speculation. What might have been and what has beenPoint to one end, which is always present.Footfalls echo in the memoryDown the passage which we did not takeTowards the door we never openedInto the rose-garden. My words echoThus, in your mind. But to what purposeDisturbing the dust on a bowl of rose-leavesI do not know. Other echoesInhabit the garden. Shall we follow?Quick, said the bird, find them, find them,Round the corner. Through the first gate,Into our first world, shall we followThe deception of the thrush? Into our first world. There they were, dignified, invisible,Moving without pressure, over the dead leaves,In the autumn heat, through the vibrant air,And the bird called, in response toThe unheard music hidden in the shrubbery,And the unseen eyebeam crossed, for the rosesHad the look of flowers that are looked at.There they were as our guests, accepted and accepting. So we moved, and they, in a formal pattern,Along the empty alley, into the box...

KadriNrusimha swamy Temple

KadriNrusimha swamy Temple
Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple is located in the heart of the town of Kadiri, in Anantapur district 100 Kilometers from Puttaparti.Legend has it that after annihilating Hiranyakashipa the Lord conciliated by the prayers of Prahlada shuns his frightening persona and appears in a protecting semblance. The deity at Kadiri symbolizes this transformational phase of the Lord who is in a stage of his fury culminating on Hiranyakashipa on his lap and becoming appeased to the prayers of Prahlada with folding hands on his side.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things
"War, in a good cause, is not the greatest evil which a nation can suffer. War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing is worth a war, is worse. When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people. On the other hand, war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice -- a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their free choice -- is often the means of their regeneration. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares about more than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever-renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need be, to do battle, one against the other."-John Stuart Mill, April 1862. Written in England in support of the Union north in the American Civil War. Applicable to our situation today. War is an ugly thing, appeasement is uglier.
